Diploma Course

The Diploma Course offers training in Group & Individual Psychodrama Psychotherapy. It aims to produce practitioners who will be professionally competent in these areas. The British Psychodrama Association (BPA) accredits the London Centre of Psychodrama Group & Individual Psychotherapy as a Training Organisation. It is the accrediting body within the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy).

Course details

The minimum length of time to complete the diploma course will normally be four years. Within this period the trainee will have an understanding of:

  • Academic Study of psychodramatic theory and action methods
  • Theories of Human Psychological Development
  • Psychopathology /causation/intervention.
  • Other psychological models and their interventions
  • Psychodynamic Concepts
  • Other psychotherapeutic approaches
  • Ethical, sociological and intercultural aspects of psychotherapy
  • Theories of Assessment
  • Principles of Individual & Group Practice.

Enrolment criteria

All applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Be at least 21 years of age
  2. Have a degree or equivalent life experience
  3. Be in a position to meet the physical, emotional and intellectual demands of the course
  4. Provide at least one professional and one personal reference
  5. Have a training or experience in the mental health field, or must undertake 100 hours structured mental health experience
  6. Show evidence of self-development.

Course Requirements

The course consists of the following elements:

  • Personal Therapy throughout the duration of the course
  • Attending training weekends (10 per academic year Fri evening/Sat/Sun)
  • Academic Study
  • Personal Journal
  • Supervised Clinical Practice 450 hours (See Client Practice)

Client Practice:

  • Individual Practice: Trainees will be required to take on two short-term clients (for a minimum of fourteen weekly sessions) in their second year & one medium term clients (for a minimum of 52 weekly sessions) in their third and fourth years. This is subject to the readiness of the trainee. It is a requirement of the centre that the trainees will continue with client caseload until the clients are ready to terminate irrespective of the completion of the course
  • Group Practice: Trainees will be required to run a Psychodrama group in their second year for a minimum of 80 sessions. And one other time-limited group - to be discussed

Course Requirements will be arranged as follows:

Training in Individual Counselling Skills:

Attendance and participation in peer counselling sessions and micro-skill practice during training plus attendance at seminars and required reading.

Training in Psychodrama Practice:

Attendance and participation in peer training weekends plus attendance at seminars and required reading.

Written Work:

  • Summaries of academic seminars.
  • Personal Journal: The trainee will keep a personal journal of their self-development as they progress through the course and submit a written self-assessment summary each year.
  • Theoretical Paper: The trainee will present a written paper in the first academic year. The paper will demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical work covered in the first year. (3000-5000 words).
  • Client Report: The trainee will present a clinical report on one short-term client (2,000 words) and on one medium term client (4,000 words)
  • Clinical Paper: The trainee will present a clinical paper at the end of their fourth year. The paper will demonstrate an understanding of the areas of study and their clinical application to psychodrama and the group (12000-18000 words).

Academic Programme

Stage One:

The Study of the Central Tenets of Moreno's Philosophy. An overview of Existential & Humanist Approaches with particular focus on Psychodrama and its application to individual and group practice; mental health placement; theoretical paper & completion of summaries.

Stage Two:

The use of the creative medium in individual and group practice.
Study of human development; major psychoanalytic theories; psychopathology and interventions. Principles of psychotherapeutic practice; assessment theories.
Supervised Short Term Client Practice.
Successful completion of written work: Submission of summaries and Short-term client report.

Stage Three

The use of the creative medium in individual & group practice.
Person centred theory & philosophy in action; sociological & intercultural aspects of individual & group practice.
Supervised Medium Term Client Practice.
Supervised Clinical Psychodrama Group Practice
Submission of summaries.

Stage Four:

The use of the creative medium in individual & group practice.
The use of dreams, myths, and fairy tales in psychotherapeutic practice.
An overview of other Psychotherapeutic approaches. Research findings and methods
Supervised Medium Term Client Practice
Supervised Clinical Group Practice/Practicum
Successful completion of written work: Submission of summaries and Clinical Paper.
Assessment of clinical competence by external examiner.

Practicalities

Tutorials:

Individual tutorials will review practice work, written work, progress in skills and personal development, set goals, discuss personal, practical, professional and academic issues arising from the course. These will occur at least three times per year.

Registration & Log:

Trainees will be required to register as members of the B.P.A. Trainees will keep a log of all activities relevant to their training. The log will keep a record of the hours and credits gained for each activity and each entry will be signed.

Assessment:

Trainees are assessed continuously and at the end of each stage before continuing the course. This is done by self-assessment, peer group assessment and feedback. There are also individual reviews of personal development, skill development, theoretical understanding and written work with the course directors. Progress through the course is at the discretion of the course director and conditional on fulfilment of all course requirements.

The Award of the Diploma:

This will be subject to satisfactory attendance at training weekends; satisfactory completion of personal therapy; individual training client hours and group practice supported by a satisfactory supervisor's report; satisfactory completion of written work. Our External Examiner will assess a sample of course work and Psychodrama Practicum.

Fees per annum: £2780.

Fees can be paid in instalments.
